THE FIREBIRD

Ingredients:

2 oz Nelson’s Green Brier TN Whiskey

3⁄4 oz fresh lemon juice

1 oz Nashville Hot Chicken Syrup

Sparkling wine, to top

Pickle slice, to garnish

Directions:

Shake ingredients in a shaker with ice.

Strain into a mason jar filled with new ice. Pour into a mason jar.

Top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a pickle slice.

Blueprint is all Old Hollywood glitz and glam with plush red leather booths, mirrors, and a wide stage right above the marble bar. Thursday through Sunday night you’ll find local and national artists doing what Nashville does best—drinking hot chicken-flavored cocktails (it’s a thing) and performing up on that stage. On Thursdays, the live band karaoke gives you a chance to actualize your “I was discovered at a bar” dreams. If that doesn’t work out, the cocktails on the menu—like the Smoke on the Water with jalapeño-infused mezcal and lychee—are there to help you keep it moving. They also turn into a nightclub later in the night Thursday through Saturday.

On Wednesday, September 25, Nashville Lifestyles hosted its Annual Most Beautiful People Reveal Party at the newly-opened Blueprint Underground Cocktail Club in Downtown Nashville.

The evening marked the 25th anniversary celebration of the magazine while honoring 25 Nashvillians featured in this year's Most Beautiful People issue. Attendees included country music star Miranda Lambert, Tennessee Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, Judah Akers of Judah & the Lion, actor Kellan Lutz, celebrity chef Maneet Chauhan, Nashville SC star Taylor Washington, singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat, influencers Mallory Ervin and Ashley Wilson, singer Sam Williams, and more.

Honorees and guests mixed and mingled over passed hors d'oeuvres and drinks in Billy Dec's newest Nashville concept and swanky Printers Alley hot spot. Attendees lounged by the stately bar and at the plush red booths while sipping the refreshing featured cocktails all made with Southbound Tequila, including the Last Word, a Paloma, and the New Fashion.

Guests were greeted out front by a stunning AMG Coupe from Mercedes-Benz of Music City. Inside, attendees shopped bespoke menswear from Hive & Colony, learned about SoundWaves and holiday happenings at Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, and had a chance to learn all about The Root Brands by Dr. Christina Rahm. The Blueprint Underground Cocktail Club officially opened in Printers Alley on May 31, 2024, attracting numerous celebrities, including performances by Colbie Caillat and Macy Gray, plus appearances by Reba McEntire, Randy Houser, Ashley McBryde, Martina McBride, Chris Kirkpatrick, and Johnny Galecki. The concept comes from Emmy Award-winning TV personality, actor, and serial entrepreneur, Billy Dec, who is also the founder of Sunda New Asian. The club, which has another location in Chicago, pays homage to historic Printers Alley, incorporating its rich history into the design, menu, and overall concept. The Blueprint features diverse entertainment, including live bands (including live band karaoke every Thursday night at 8:00pm), DJs, and fashion shows, with a unique multi-sensory experience. Nashville Guru stopped by to get a look inside.

Enter the doors from Printers Alley and expect a dim and moody atmosphere with multi-colored lights and eclectic music programming ranging from live bands to DJs spinning high-energy hits. Blueprint’s strategically positioned stage above the bar is the focal point, where guests can watch the band while ordering a finely-crafted cocktail. Plush booths, mirrors, and cocktail tables are located throughout. When the weather permits, the windows open to the alley, providing views of the elaborate butterfly mural across the way.

Blueprint is located in an underground area of Printers Alley, giving it one of the most unique positions in the city. There’s an exterior patio where guests can sip cocktails while watching people explore the historic location.

The menu honors both Nashville and Printers Alley, with a touch of Chicago, Dec’s hometown. Items include The Magic Puff, a local take on Chicago’s renowned pizza puff, and The Chosen One, a luxurious chicken nugget adorned with creme fraiche and caviar. The cocktail selection boasts both classic drinks and unique Printers-themed creations, such as The Heaven Lee, a sparkling cocktail inspired by the famous burlesque dancer and activist from Embers Lounge. The Blueprint Bathtub, a large format cocktail served in a mini bathtub, is a must-order (and have your camera ready to capture the bubbles!).

Actor, TV personality, and serial entrepreneur Billy Dec opened the famous Underground Club in his native Chicago nearly two decades ago. It was the local haunt for celebrities like Michael Jordan, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, David Beckham, Justin Bieber, and many others.

His newest nightclub venture in Nashville drew big names, as well, at its grand-opening six weeks ago. Reba McEntire, Martina McBryde, Macy Gray, NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick, actor Johnny Galecki (and business partner of Dec’s), Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin (also a business partner), Randy Houser, Colbie Caillat, and others, were among the special guests.

The multi-talented Dec, whose long list of accomplishments includes acting in TV shows like Entourage, Criminal Minds, Chicago Fire, and even several episodes of Friends, owns the restaurant chain “Sunda New Asian.” Early in his career, he discovered he had a gift for the hospitality industry with a unique understanding of what it takes to create and run a successful nightclub.

“I was born and raised in Chicago, and I put myself through college and law school by working in restaurants,” he explains. “And then after the restaurants would close, I would work at nightclubs. And I built a network/passion thing to the point where I was really good at it, and I opened my first nightclub during my first year of law school. And I just kept opening clubs. I think, overall, I’ve opened eight or nine.”

He left Chicago for Nashville eight years ago and soon opened Sunda New Asian restaurant in the Gulch. (His other Sunda locations include two in Chicago, one in Tampa, and one under construction in Detroit.)

But as he watched Nashville’s tourist industry explode, with out-of-town visitors pouring onto the city’s busy Lower Broadway area with its many country music hotspots, he noticed something missing. He saw the need for an upscale cocktail lounge and music venue much like what he’d created in Chicago.

“The question we kept getting from people who came into Sunda, after they’d gotten dressed up and arranged for babysitters to go out and have an awesome dinner for a date night or while visiting was, ‘Where do we go now?’”

Dec discovered many wanted another option beyond the hustle and bustle of Lower Broadway.

“People love the honky tonks, but with the diversity of people coming into Nashville, some want to do other things and dress differently. They might pack the boots and hat for a night on Broadway but then want to look cute and dress up another night. And there was no place to go.”

So, he decided to open The Blueprint Underground Cocktail Club (also called the Blueprint Supply Company) in historic Printers Alley. It’s just a couple of streets over from Broadway, with music venues, restaurants, and hotels but the vibe is completely different. This section of Nashville was home to the city’s thriving publishing industry at the turn of the 20th century, then during the 1940s and 50s became a nightclub district where artists played jazz, blues, and varying styles of music.

“I’ve learned during my eight years of living here that a lot of locals usually don’t go to Broadway unless they’re entertaining out-of-town guests or going to a special event, but they go to Printers Alley,” says Dec. “It has the entertainment component, but not the chaos.”

His new club features a unique and eclectic menu that highlights Nashville, Printers Alley, and his native Chicago. A couple of items to note include The Magic Puff (a take on Chicago’s famous pizza puff) and The Chosen One (chicken nuggets with crème fraiche and caviar). And if you’re an Elvis fan…

“We have fun, nostalgic things like an Elvis Sandwich with local peanut butter and jelly, a banana, and local bacon in it,” Dec says.

Since Blueprint is more of an upscale cocktail club, there’s a wide variety of both classic and specialty cocktails. And with Nashville famous for hot chicken, one cocktail definitely worth trying is the Firebird.

“We took these spices from a hot chicken recipe and worked with our mixologist to create this incredible hot chicken syrup we integrate with Nelson’s Green Brier Whiskey. Then we add a little lime and top it with Prosecco.”

Entertainment is a top priority at Blueprint. Like its predecessor club in Chicago, guests stopping by The Blueprint Underground can look forward to surprising collaborations like the one that kicked things off on opening night.

“That night Macy Gray played a cover of Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly” and then halfway through it, Colbie walked out to the stage, and the crowd just went nuts,” says Dec. “That sort of diversity of different genres and styles is something Printer’s did back in the day. So, it’s really cool to be able to bring it back and celebrate it, but I think it also fits a demand shift for today.”

Blueprint is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 5pm to 3am with the musical tempo building as the night goes on.

“From 5 to 7, the vibe is sort of jazzy and chill with a cocktail bar kind of feel,” Dec says. “Then from 7 to 11 it hypes up with a bigger band that plays more recognizable music with a creative spin to it. And from 11 until 3 in the morning, a DJ that will play more high-energy dance music.”

Beginning next week (July 18th), Blueprint will add a new element to its music mix with live band Karaoke on Thursday nights.

Dec is excited about bringing something new and different to downtown Nashville.

“People have asked if it’s private or members only and it’s not. It’s very open and very accessible and there’s no cover charge. One of our DNA pillars in our love and caring for servicing people and hospitality is trying to find that line between sophisticated and approachable. We’re trying to do our best even as we try to raise the bar a little bit.”

The Underground Cocktail Club in Chicago, named “Hottest Nightclub” by Entertainment Weekly, has expanded its footprint to the great city of Nashville, following its sister restaurant and event concept, Sunda New Asian, and its success in The Gulch. Named “King of Clubs” by Chicago Tribune and “Operator of the Year” by Nightclub & Bar Magazine, Emmy Award- winning TV personality, actor, and serial entrepreneur Billy Dec is evolving the name of his Award-Winning Chicago-nightlife concept, Underground Cocktail Club, to include The Blueprint. Paying homage to the legacy of Printers Alley and the original print shop that stood on the same grounds 100 years ago, The Blueprint Supply Co. Underground Cocktail Club.

The Blueprint is designed to showcase every type of event, live music performance, and every artist imaginable. From fashion shows and international DJs to local singer-songwriters, culinary and cocktail events, it will be a new hot spot for local creatives in the heart of downtown Nashville. Equipped with a vision of innovation and complete immersion, Dec and the team deliver revolutionary sound and lighting that rivals top international nightlife destinations.

The star-studded opening weekend of The Blueprint included appearances and performances by Colbie Caillat, Macy Gray, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Ashley McBryde and Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC.

Dec wants to pay homage to Printer’s rich history as a hub for print shops, publishers, and storytelling, to be the home for all genres from jazz to rock ‘n’ roll (like Jimi Hendrix, who rocked Printers often). “The Blueprint Supply Co. was the actual name of the print shop that stood on our foundation, and we pay respect to all who contributed to Printers history by naming it The Blueprint. There’s so much history to tell and history to make here. We can’t wait to share it with everyone in Nashville.”

A Chicago native, Dec has called Nashville home for the last eight years and has partnered with Nashville’s award-winning architecture, interiors, and construction firm, Powell, who has earned a reputation for setting the physical foundation for Nashville’s burgeoning restaurant and hospitality scene. Dec also collaborated with veteran nightclub designer Marc Dizon, who is responsible for the vision and design of top nightlife venues around the globe. The space is inviting, with a permanent stage behind the spacious marble bar, mirrored walls, and generous banquettes, with seating both indoors and out on the adjacent terrace. Windows facing along Printer’s Alley open wide to beckon you in to join in the fun. The space is intended for you to be able to meet for an after work or preshow/predinner cocktail and take in the ambiance—the energy level does increase the later into the evening (or morning) you stay.

The cocktail menu has a combination of classic and innovative specialty cocktails, and a selection of mocktails, beers, seltzers and wines. Blueprint also features Bottle Service and Large Format Cocktails, such as the Blueprint Bathtub and the Printer’s Press to share with your table. If you are in need of a little nibble to absorb some of those beverages, the menu features snacks like Printer’s Pups (mini corn dogs) and Truffle Tots, and handhelds like The Elvis (a toasted peanut butter, strawberry jelly, bananas and Benton’s bacon sandwich), and The Magic Dragon (an homage to Chicago’s Pizza Puff). Encore offerings like cotton candy and Paradiddles (cinnamon churros with dark chocolate and caramel sauce) will satisfy your late-night sweet tooth.

Dec opened his restaurant and entertainment venue, Sunda New Asian, in The Gulch in downtown Nashville in 2018. TV personality, actor, and entrepreneur Billy Dec is evolving the name of his nightlife concept to include “The Blueprint.” Paying homage to the legacy of Printers Alley and the original print shop that stood on the same grounds, The Blue Print Supply Co., The Blueprint Underground Cocktail Club will open in the Spring of 2024.
